Terms of Service — Halal Scanner
Effective date: September 2026
Last updated: September 2026
1. Agreement
These Terms govern your use of the Halal Scanner iOS app ("the app", "the service"). By downloading or using the app you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
2. What the service does
Halal Scanner lets you scan a product barcode or photograph an ingredient list. It analyses the ingredients and returns an indicative halal status (halal, mushbooh, or not halal), a health score, a diabetic-suitability indication, and allergen information.
3. Nature and limits of the analysis — please read
This section is the most important part of these Terms.
- The app is informational, not authoritative. It is a research aid. It is not a halal certification body, it does not issue religious rulings, and its output is not a fatwa.
- The analysis is AI-generated and can be wrong. It may misread a blurred or partial label, misidentify an ingredient, or reach a different conclusion than a qualified scholar or certifier would.
- It only sees the label. It cannot account for undeclared processing aids, cross-contamination, shared production lines, regional recipe differences, or which source a manufacturer used for a given batch.
- Scholarly opinions differ. Rulings on ingredients such as gelatin, carmine, or trace alcohol vary between schools of thought and certification bodies. The app reflects common positions, not a single binding one.
- Allergen and health information is not medical advice. If you have a food allergy, a medical condition, or diabetes, rely on the product label and your healthcare professional — never on this app alone. A missed allergen can be dangerous.
For any decision that matters to you, verify against a recognised halal certification mark on the packaging, the manufacturer, or a qualified scholar. You use the app's output at your own discretion and risk.
4. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use the app. If you are under the age of majority in your country, you may use it only with the involvement of a parent or guardian.
5. Free scans, PRO, and billing
- Each installation includes a number of free scans (currently 30). Leaving an App Store review can earn additional free scans, granted once.
- PRO removes the scan limit and is offered as a weekly, monthly, or yearly auto-renewing subscription, with a free trial period where advertised.
- Prices are shown in the app in your local currency and vary by region. All purchases are processed by Apple.
- Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel in iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
- If you cancel during a free trial, you will not be charged; the unused portion of a trial is forfeited when you buy a subscription.
- Refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store terms, not by us. Free scans have no cash value and are not transferable.
- Free-scan allowances are tied to an installation. Deleting and reinstalling the app does not reliably preserve them, and deliberately reinstalling to obtain more free scans is a misuse of the service.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the app for any unlawful purpose, or in breach of these Terms;
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code or prompts of the app or its backend, except where that restriction is prohibited by law;
- Access the backend API by any means other than the app, or attempt to bypass rate limits, scan limits, or authentication;
- Scrape, resell, or redistribute the app's analyses as a commercial product or dataset;
- Upload content you have no right to photograph, or content that is unlawful;
- Present the app's output as a halal certification, or as the ruling of any certification body or scholar.
We may limit or terminate access for any installation that breaches these Terms.
7. Intellectual property
The app, its interface, and its content are owned by us and protected by intellectual property law. You get a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the app for your own non-commercial purposes. Photographs you take remain yours.
Barcode product data is retrieved from Open Food Facts and is made available by that project under its own open-data licence.
8. Third-party services
The app depends on third parties including Apple, Google Cloud and Firebase, OpenRouter, Open Food Facts, RevenueCat, Mixpanel, and TikTok. Their availability and their own terms are outside our control, and interruptions in their services may affect the app.
9. Availability
We aim to keep the service running but do not guarantee uninterrupted availability. Features may change, and we may modify or discontinue any part of the service. If we discontinue a paid feature, Apple's refund policies apply.
10. Disclaimer of warranties
The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or that the analysis will be accurate, complete, current, or religiously correct.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from your reliance on the app's analysis — including consuming a product the app indicated was halal, healthy, diabetic-suitable, or free of a given allergen. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us for the app in the twelve months before the claim.
Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
12. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify us against claims arising from your misuse of the app or your breach of these Terms.
13. Apple
These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide support for the app and is not responsible for any claim relating to it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
14. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. Material changes will be signalled in the app or by updating the "Last updated" date. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.
15. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of your country of residence, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and disputes shall be resolved in the courts of your country of residence unless applicable consumer protection law requires otherwise.
